Felicity's story: shared goals of care

19 Nov 2021

In this video Felicity shares her story of advocating for her mother’s wishes and values when her mother was dying.

When Felicity’s elderly mother Maire was admitted to hospital with shortness of breath and heart failure, clinicians focused on her acute condition and provided various medical interventions. However, at that point Maire wanted palliative care and to go back to her rest home.

Felicity advocated for her mother to receive the kind of care she wanted, and after some discussions with the health care team, arranged for Marie to be discharged back to aged residential care. Once she was back in the rest home, Marie’s wishes were at the centre of the care she received. She passed away surrounded by her friends and family.

Felicity’s story highlights the importance of considering patients’ values and of making sure that patients and whānau are supported and included in the decision-making process.
