Te Tāhū Hauora Health Quality & Safety Commission (Te Tāhū Hauora) measures hand hygiene compliance as part of the Hand Hygiene New Zealand (HHNZ) programme.
The HHNZ programme uses the World Health Organization’s ‘5 Moments for Hand Hygiene’ multimodal improvement strategy to drive culture change and establish hand hygiene best practice for every patient, every time.
Good hand hygiene is one of the simplest, most effective ways to prevent the spread of healthcare-associated infections, which makes it a key patient safety priority.
Hand hygiene national quality and safety markers
The national quality and safety marker (QSM) for hand hygiene is 80 percent compliance with good hand hygiene practice. The latest QSM results are available here.
Hand Hygiene New Zealand dashboard
From November 2023, the paper-based national hand hygiene compliance reports will be replaced with an electronic hand hygiene dashboard that is updated after each audit period.
Access the electronic dashboard here.
